Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
