The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
